APA Citing and Referencing

Introduction to APA

An APA stands for American Psychological Association. It is the style typically used to cite the sources of information. Most specifically, in social sciences. The 6th edition guide is the most recent ones, the second printing of the APA manual. The guide offers examples of the general formats for citations of research papers, in-text, and the reference page.

APA In-text Citations

An in-text citation is within the body of the paper which signifies an entry to your reference page.  Include an in-text citation when you refer to, summarize, paraphrase, or quote from another source.

The in-text citation is easy to use in APA compared to the reference list which varies from different sources. When using the APA format, follow the author-date method of in-text citation. It means that the author’s last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, for example, (Peter, 2018).

Now, if you are only referring to the idea from another’s work but not directly quoting the specific material, or making reference to an entire book, an article or other work, use only the author and the year of publication. There is no need to include the page number in your in-text citation. Remember to include all sources cited in the text in the reference list found at the end of the paper.

As I have said, the reference list is more complicated to do because different rules apply to various sources. Say, how to cite a book varies form citing a journal, the same way, it differs when citing it online. More often, it becomes confusing and difficult to follow. It is one of the reasons why the guide above for academic writing is necessary.

This ebook above contains the essential guidelines for structuring and formatting your academic document using the American Psychological Association (APA) Style. It focuses on the general guidelines of APA writing and the specific guidelines on the use of in-text and the reference citations that are easy to follow.
